It has always puzzled me why we anglicise the place names of places we visit. We do it in countries all over the world, we do it in atlases and on maps, in TV programs and in literature, we have always done it. But that doesn’t make it right. This is my attempt to change the narrative. Aotearoa had names before Tasman came here, before Cook, before D'urville, before the Royal chart makers, before Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Why did we ever change?
All of the places named by Cook or the phonetic Maori names on his original map, have been replaced on this map with the original place names as best I can source. The original antique map was engraved by Barak Longmate as Plate 25 in the Hawkesworth publication of Cook's voyages (1773) and was hand coloured.
I welcome corrections on any place names.
