kākā (Nestor meridionalis)

Generally heard before they are seen, kaka are a large, forest-dwelling parrot, they are cheeky and inquisitive but not quite as confident as their mountain dwelling cousins the kea. Although mostly a dull olive brown colour they have a stunning red flash under their wings.
